De sociale oorsprong van de Brusselse gegoede burgerij van 1914. (2e deel - 2me partie).

J. DE BELDER
The Social Origins Of The Brussels Propertied Middle-Classes Of 1914: The fact of having the disposal of all means of power of the establishment is not the only reason for the survival of the middle-class society. The flexible character of capitalism is attributable in the first place to a chance built-in mutation mechanism of the executive groups. Renewed executive groups adapt themselves to the contemporary circumstances more easily than a hereditary class, thus protecting the system from an undermining of its power.

De sociale en politieke reacties van de Brugse volksmassa op het einde van het Ancien Régime (1770-1794).

Y. VANDEN BERGHE
Social And Political Reactions Of The Bruges Popular Mass At The End Of The Ancien Regime (1770-1794): Generally speaking the conditions of life of the lower social classes at Bruges were the same as in all other West European cities. The popular mass had to contend with continuous price increases whereas wages remained stationary or even decreased. Without support the Bruges working-class families could not possibly make both ends meet. A t Bruges, this support was remarkably well organized, but eventually proved insufficient.

M. BRUWIER
Machine-Workers From Liege And Namur In The Borinage Late Xviiith Early Xlxth Centuries. Contribution To Industrial & Social History: The first steam-engines of the continent (Newcomen type) were sent from. England as a number of component parts and assembled on the spot. Although historians have attributed engines of this kind in the Borinage to engineers from Liège or Namur, no proof of this has been forthcoming in order to verify the origin of several such engineers and their social background. Three families appear in this study.

J. HANNES
C. LIS
Social Hierarchy In Housing. Antwerp About 1834: How rich are rich people, how poor are poor people ? This is a much vexing question, especially when asked for the last century. The problem is to construct a kind of pyramid, where everyone has a definite place according to his wealth or lack of it. But how to build such a pyramid ? The authors started from the assumption, that there exists a correlation between the value of the habitation of the invidual and his financial situation.
