Welke toekomst voor een bevrijd België ? Hoe de Vlaamse verzetspers zich voorbereidde op het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog

Samenvatting

Dit artikel onderzoekt de toekomst van België na de bevrijding zoals beschreven in de Vlaamse verzetspers tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Naast het geven van een overkoepelend beeld van deze toekomstvisie, wordt ook de relevantie ervan voor Vlaanderen geanalyseerd. Paste deze toekomst- visie in het politieke debat tijdens de vooroorlogse en naoorlogse periode ? Was de relatief geringe impact van het verzet en het feit dat het uit de Vlaamse oorlogsherinnering werd gewist te wijten aan het feit dat het geen aantrekkelijke of relevante toekomstvisie kon ontwikkelen ?

De boodschap van het Vlaamse verzet werd nog maar weinig onderzocht. Aan de hand van de analyse van de toekomstvisie tracht dit onderzoek aan te tonen dat de boodschap van de Vlaamse verzetspers wel degelijk relevant was voor Vlaanderen en continuïteit vertoonde met thema’s die reeds tijdens het interbellum actueel waren. Niet zozeer het gebrek aan relevantie van de boodschap van het verzet maar eerder de specifieke Belgische politieke cultuur was bepalend voor het lot van het verzet als politieke actor en voor het ontbreken van het verzet in onze Vlaamse oorlogsherinnering.

Résumé

Cet article examine le futur de la Belgique après la libération tel qu’il est décrit dans la presse fla- mande résistante durant la Deuxième Guerre. En plus de donner une image globale de leur vision du futur, l’article propose également une réflexion sur la pertinence de celle-ci pour la Flandre. Cette vision du futur s’applique-t-elle dans le débat politique durant l’avant et l’après-guerre ? L’impact relativement faible de la résistance et le fait qu’elle ait été effacée de la mémoire flamande de la guerre ont-ils été dus au fait qu’elle ne pouvait pas développer une vision attrayante ou pertinente de l’avenir ?

Le message de la résistance flamande a cependant été peu étudié et c’est exactement ce que cet article veut faire. En analysant leur vision du futur, cette recherche tente de montrer que le message de la presse de la résistance flamande était pertinent pour la Flandre et qu’il était en continuité avec des thèmes déjà existants pendant l’entre- deux-guerres. Ce n’est pas tant le manque de pertinence du message, mais plutôt la spécificité de la culture politique belge qui a été décisive pour le destin de la résistance en tant qu’acteur politique, ainsi que pour son absence dans notre mémoire flamande de la guerre.

Abstract

This article focuses on the future of Belgium after the liberation as represented in the Flemish resistance press during the Second World War. It gives an overall picture of this vision of the future and also considers its relevance for Flanders. Did this vision fit into the political debate of the pre- and post-war period ? Was the relatively limited impact of the resistance and the fact that it was erased from the Flemish war memory caused by the absence of an attractive or relevant vision for the future ?

Based on the analysis of the vision of the future, this study aims to demonstrate that the message of the Flemish resistance press was definitively relevant for Flanders and presented a continuity with subjects that were already of interest during the interwar period. It was not so much the lack of relevance of the message of the resistance, but the specific Belgian political culture that was essential for the fate of the resistance as a political actor and for the absence of the resistance in Flemish war memory.
