This article deals with the different layers of meaning in building designs, developed in the first half of the twentieth century for the progressive Decroly School l'Ermitage in Uccle. The authors focus in particular on the non-realized design (1946) by Renaat Braem and Jack Sokol as well as on the context in which this design has been developed.
Measuring employment in the food industry: comparing the Belgian censuses, 1910-1930.
We examine the historical value of the population census and of the two surveys organised within the industrial and commercial census for the measurement of employment. The food industry is taken as a case study. We find that these censuses offer comparable results. In contrast to previous research we see no reason to discard some of these datasets.
"In Belgium, women do all the work." De arbeid van vrouwen in de Luikse mijnen, negentiende-begin twintigste eeuw.
Aan de hand van empirisch onderzoek in de werkboekjes en statistische reeksen werd de aanwezigheid van vrouwen in de Luikse steenkolennijverheid onderzocht. Enerzijds werd de omvang en de duur van de vrouwenarbeid behandeld, anderzijds werd ook gekeken naar welke functies ze in de mijnen toebedeeld kregen. De Belgische vrouwen bleken inderdaad langer en meer aanwezig in de steenkolenmijnen, maar ze vervulden dezelfde taken als mijnwerksters in de omringende landen.
Belgian Historical Demography as Viewed from North America: Protoindustrialization, Fertility Decline, and the Use of Population Registers.
Research in Belgian historical demography played an important role in two debates widely discussed by North American scholars. Protoindustrialization, the spread of rural industry, was linked to declining ages at marriage, population growth and poverty. Belgian research on the transition to low fertility showed that culture played an important role and that economic conditions affected the spread of family limitation within communities.

Naar de geografische ontwikkeling van de 19de-eeuwse kleinhandel in België werd – in tegenstelling tot Groot-Brittannië – tot op heden geen onderzoek verricht. Dit artikel wil Britse theorieën toetsen aan de geografische ontwikkeling van voedingswinkels in Leuven en onderscheidt tevens zes factoren die de vastgestelde verschuivingen kunnen verklaren.
