The impact of the First World War on the citizens of Ypres: a demographic perspective

Pieter TROGH

Overshadowed by the attention paid to geopolitical, military, socio-economic or cultural aspects, the impact the First World War had on the demographics of communities that lived in the front zone, has seldom been considered. The war uprooted millions of people, be they civilians or soldiers. A difficult return home awaited many after the war. Against this backdrop, Ypres was a special case. Thousands of refugees had flocked to the town in the early stages of the war, but, by October 1914, the city found itself on the frontline of the assault that so many had hoped to flee.

Taxes, property size, occupations and social structure: the case of the 18th- and 19th-century northern Dutch countryside.

Richard Paping

Individual tax data for Groningen indicates that a general social stratification scheme based on occupation only results in rather meaningless and overlapping social groups. Regionally based improvements can be made by adding information on investment, land use, other economic activities and the stage in the family lifecycle.

Measuring employment in the food industry: comparing the Belgian censuses, 1910-1930.

Peter Van der Hallen
Erik Buyst
We examine the historical value of the population census and of the two surveys organised within the industrial and commercial census for the measurement of employment. The food industry is taken as a case study. We find that these censuses offer comparable results. In contrast to previous research we see no reason to discard some of these datasets.

Muriel Neven
Isabelle Devos
The introductory article of this special issue presents the main research results and trends in Belgian historical demography of the past two decades. Belgian researchers have displayed great dynamism and have broken down many stereotypes. Their attempts have been original thanks to the particularity of their sources, they have searched for methodological innovation and have challenged traditional ideas.

Epidemiology of Town and Countryside: Mortality and Causes of Death in East Belgium, 1850-1910.

Muriel Neven
The mortality analysis in East Belgium during the second part of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century reveals a deep disparity between town and countryside, which however disappears at the end of the period. Although its interpretation is difficult, the statistic of causes of deaths locates the original gap in the context of an epidemiological depression which affects the urban centres between 1830 and 1870.
